Forge
Based on a finding from the Závist oppidum, acropolis, building no. XVI
The Forge is built away from other buildings to prevent fire hazards – only hard oak wood and a turf roof are used. Here you can see a forge for heating iron, bellows, and a large stone anvil. The Celts made weapons, tools, structural ironwork, household items, and also jewelry from iron. To obtain iron, it is first necessary to smelt iron ore. The remains of smelting furnaces can be seen by the rampart.
When the blacksmith works here, it gets very hot from the forge and there’s also a lot of noise from the constant hammering. Iron is used to make knives, axes, saws, plowshares, sickles, scythes, tongs, swords, spears, jewelry, and also things like chains, brackets, and nails. For the blacksmith to forge iron, he must heat it in the forge, and for the forge to heat well, it must be fueled with charcoal and air must be blown into it with leather bellows. Even children could help with the bellows, so come and try it yourself.
